Free holiday help: toys, meals and bills

Most holiday programs take sign-ups in October and early November, weeks before the holidays. Wait until December and the lists are often full. Here's what to sign up for now.

Do these this week

  1. Dial 2-1-1 and ask: "What holiday help is there in my county, and when do sign-ups close?"
  2. Sign up for a toy program: Salvation Army Angel Tree or Toys for Tots.
  3. Ask your food bank about holiday meals and food boxes.
  4. Apply for heating help now, before winter bills arrive.

Toys and clothes for kids

Salvation Army Angel Tree. Families sign up their children, and donors buy clothes and toys from each child's wish list. Many areas serve children 12 and under, and some also help seniors. Sign-up dates are set locally, and in many places registration runs in September and October. Call your local Salvation Army or dial 211 to find the dates.

What to bring is set locally too. One area's list, as an example: a photo ID for the parent or guardian, proof of address, proof of all household income (including SNAP), a birth certificate or Medicaid card for each child, and clothing and shoe sizes.

Toys for Tots. You apply through the local campaign that serves your area. Go to the Toys for Tots request page, find your local campaign, and apply there. Each campaign sets its own dates and rules.

Sign up with only one toy program unless your area says it's OK. Many programs share lists and remove families who sign up in more than one place.

Holiday meals and food

  • Food banks often give out holiday boxes or turkeys. Find yours: Feeding America food bank finder. Ask about sign-up dates; some fill up early.
  • Salvation Army, churches and community centers often serve free Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. 211 has the local list.
  • SNAP (food stamps) helps every month, not just the holidays. Find your state's application on our state pages.

Heating and holiday bills

Winter bills land right after the holidays. Apply for energy help now: heating assistance is often first come, first served, and federal law this year requires most of the money to reach states by November 1. See how to apply for LIHEAP and winter heating bill help. Many states also limit winter shutoffs. Check yours on our state pages.

Watch out for holiday scams

Real holiday programs never charge a fee to sign up. Be careful with social media posts promising free toys, gift cards or "holiday grants" that ask for money, your Social Security number or bank details. Sign up only through the organization's own website, office or 211. Report scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
