Corrections and how we check facts

People act on what we write when a shutoff notice is on the table, so we check every rule, date and phone number against the official source and we publish what we fix.

How we check facts

Every winter shutoff rule, medical protection, program date and phone number on our state pages is checked against an official source: the state utility commission, the agency that runs the program, or the rule itself. Each state page links to its source and shows the date we checked it.
Important changes, such as shutoff rules and phone numbers, are checked a second time by a different reviewer before they go live.
If we can't confirm a detail from an official source, we don't state it as fact. We tell you to confirm it with your utility or the agency.
We review every state each October, before winter rules start, and each March, before summer rules and program changes. We also recheck energy assistance opening dates each November and December.
If you find something wrong, email help@billhelpnow.com. We correct confirmed errors, usually within three business days, and list them here.

We rechecked 451 facts. 286 were correct as written. We corrected 140 and softened 25 we couldn't confirm. Here is what changed in each state:
